MORE THAN A GARDEN

Urbana Bašta Podgorica (UBP) is a volunteer-led community garden in the capital city of Montenegro. The largest ground-level community garden in Europe, the UBP consists of a food forest and market garden area. Diversity in the garden includes; a broad range of native and cosmopolitan flora that can be found in zones 6 to 10; volunteers from multiple countries; and people from all stages of life from toddlers to seniors.

About us

Urbana Basta Podgorica (UBP) is a project that has been designed for the well-being of the city. It is equal parts about providing a healthy location for citizens to have access to beauty and a healthy environment, an opportunity for people to learn gardening and other skills, a place where healthy foods are grown for use by volunteers and for local humanitarian organizations to feed the disadvantaged.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

There are multiple ways for people to help advance the Urbana Basta Podgorica. This can be as simple as spending time in the garden or telling someone about what is happening so more people can be aware. But, there are three practical ways that you can directly make a difference.

volunteer

We love to have volunteers that stop by just for an occasional experience. We also need individuals and groups to participate as a part of the functioning garden community. No previous skills required. Our team is ready to teach you as we learn along the way.

Contribute organics

Based on permaculture principles, the UBP never uses chemicals. We are working to gather materials for various types of compost. Bring your kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings, wood cuttings from trees, etc.

make a donation

While most of our costs have been covered with our current infrastructure buildout, we have one-time and on-going costs as we develop a unique place and grow food for the socially disadvantaged. You can help through financial donations of any size.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

This is the city we want!

The city that occupied our Saturday during which we worked for four hours in the garden, met some wonderful new people, learned about composting, layers, planted two rows of vegetables, rosemary, lavender.. We laughed, took breaks, ate apples, got suntanned, watered what we planted...

In addition to the daily stress and the fast way of life that is imposed on us, every time I visit the Urbana Basta, I experience an anti-stress therapy as well as physical activity. I have to admit that sometimes I find it hard to get up on Saturday mornings, but I always feel fulfilled and useful after the action because of the friendship and people I meet there. Also, I really enjoy being part of such a humanitarian project.

The urban garden is a beautifully conceived concept. It contributes to the betterment of others through fellowship, learning, and working together. Entire families and all generations participate in the urban garden so that the fruits of the land and their work reach the most vulnerable. Thank you on behalf of the users and volunteers of the humanitarian organization NOVA NIT for delivering healthy and organically grown fruits and vegetables to us every month.
